Distribution 1

So the first distribution was extremely successful due to its failure. Confused? Well for the first time out and about Felicia and i decided that because our resources were limited at the time (only having one costume) we wouldn't invest everything into it. This proved to be of great value as a few things happened of which we will consider for the next distribution. It was also a good chance to scope everything our and know definitely everything that is going to take place next time as it would involve our recruits and we didn't want to drag them around still not 100% of how things were going to take place.
We first set up at Town Hall right near the QVB and this was a good location as many people were about. Being a Saturday people had time stop and chat, many taking interest in Felicia being dressed up. There are a lot of Ninja Turtle fans our there! We then ventured to Darling Harbour and discovered the perfect place for our performance (turtle dying scene - hilarious!) of which people reacted well to. We managed to get a lot of people to do the symbol and know it will be even better in our second distribution as our recruits will be there to help us. With just 2 people it was extremely difficult as I was filming attempting to keep the camera steady while carrying many bags and hand out stickers. Not so great. It was all a learning experience though and we are now prepared, pumped and super excited to spread some turtle power!

MATAY, FB PAGE OVERBOARD!

So after being so cocky in my previous post and then making it to over 360 members, our facebook page went crazy due to an uncontrollable error on facebook's behalf. It then proceeded to send notifications to members repetitively resulting in over 150 people to leave the group. It was extremely annoying as people were getting angry at us thinking we kept sending the notification. After contacting facebook help and reporting the issue, they pretty much told us they couldn't help us. Felicia discussed the best way to approach this without loosing too many people and decided the best way was to delete the group and start a new one and send out new invitations for people to join. In other words start all over again. This problem is also accompanied by the fact our ebay purchases have still not arrived and we will be needing them this weekend, damn you Murphy's law! Lucky we have turtle power to fight this bad luck off, we are staying positive and occupying ourselves with other tasks that need to be completed for the distribution such as the shirts.

Guerilla ad attempt 1

Before our first main distribution we thought we would firstly test run our little guerilla ad which proved to be very helpful. Apart from getting into trouble with council workers within the fist 5 minutes of trying to dominate a park in Burwood as we were 'not allowed to block a pathway'. Another thing is we definitely underestimated the amount of tape me would need, apparently 15 metres isn't as long as you think it is! Or perhaps we did get just a little carried away. After the photos we had to take it down but we left the sticker on the drain next to the dead turtle (poor cross-eyed turtle) we noticed that the tape is definitely necessary to draw peoples attention as even when people saw the chalk they looked but didn't stop to take it all in. The most attention we drew was when we were actually putting up the tape around the area, which made people wonder what on earth we were doing. After this re-assessment our next attempt will be much more successful. Get excited!

Today there are 349 members of of save the turtles facebook page and its still growing. Viva la turtle!

Week 9 - Intangible symbols

Symbol of a sound
There was a specifically compelling point in Desiree's lecture this week - that everyone must all be signed up for the same meaning of symbols. I think this is the case with intangible symbols because they are symbolising something that doesn't have a shape or form, it is up to us to use our other senses combined with imagination of what we think the form would be. Everyone's perception of this would differ, however we all seem to associate sound with wave-like shapes. This came to my attention when looking at electronic objects used to project sound e.g. ipod, television and laptop. It is also understood that the more waves (or the bigger) the louder the sound, as can be seen in the photo of my keyboard.

Week 8 - Symbol that represents a philosophy

The Eye of Horus is an Egyptian symbol that personifies the goddess Wadjet. It is also associated with royal power and protection and i found it interesting that they used an eye to represent this. This philosophy relates to me personally as when i was little there was an enormous gum tree in our front yard and when Spring came, so did the magpies. Being much younger and fearing getting swooped by the birds it was a known thing that they tended to strike when you weren't looking. Not always being able to look up while walking, my sister and i would draw eyes on empty ice cream containers and wear them on our heads as a means of protecting ourselves.

I found this guy lining up for the ferry to Manly! He was pretty scary looking so I didn't start a conversation with him as to whether his tattoo was philosophical or not!

Turtle Power!

The ninja's have been very busy planning and organising upcoming events. We have devised our action plan that will take place over the next 7 weeks. We have put our stickers in to be printed so they will be ready in a week or less which gives us time to design a poster as another visual device. We decided to make an addition website as the link for the facebook page is long and complicated making is less likely for people to punch it into a url. This way they can see the site (which is still in the very early stages of development) making our cause appear more professional with a link that they can simply click on to take them to the facebook group. Problem solved!

Our facebook page is well and truly underway with 117 members that have joined in less than a week and many people already posting photos to show their support. Our cause has already started to spread beyond Sydney with many of these photos being taken in places such as Canberra, Tamworth and Sweden.

Week 7 - Symbols of revolution part 2

Christmas day is a symbols of revolution as the meaning has become something very different to people of today compared to what it meant years ago. Although it is a celebration of the birth of Christ, many non-Christians immerse themselves in this holiday. The idea of giving has been completely manipulated by marketing and corporations in order to boost sales rather then in the spirit of the day Jesus was born. When entering 'Christmas' into Google search engine you are bombarded with images like the top example, opposed to the bottom example.

Why are these so hard to find? Wait that right, its because Nigel used them all in class!

Top 3 turtle symbols

These are just a few ideas we have had so far for our cause symbol. I think the top left is the favourite so far because it incorporates a hand, which could catch on as a gestural symbol too.

TURTLES! The reason behind the cause.

All marine turtle species are experiencing serious threats to their survival. The main threats are pollution and changes to important turtle habitats, especially coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove forests and nesting beaches.

Many turtles eat small jellyfish and squid and often mistake plastic bags for food. This not only leads to choking, but also the combination with digestion of other food creates a gas that results in floatation.

University of Queensland's Dr. Townsned - Plastic bags turtle's greatest killer, March 2008"Sea turtles are particularly susceptible to the effects of marine rubbish due to the internal structure of their throats and die a slow and painful death. Sea turtles have downward facing spines in their throats which literally prevent them from regurgitating," Dr Townsend said. "The plastic gets trapped in the gut, preventing food from going down and the spines prevent it from coming back up. The trapped food decomposes, leaking gases into the body cavity and causing the animal to float".

By encouraging people to dispose of litter properly means less plastic in the ocean and decreased harm to marine life. The turtle will be the face of our non-littering campaign and demonstrate how something so small that can be done on a daily basis can have such a large impact on the environment. But why should people get involved? For the good of goodness sake!

Top 3 cause ideas

1. The colour yellow makes people happy. So, why not spread it for goodness sake? This idea could be infectious and we thought of it when Felicia commented on a friends shirt, which was yellow and got us thinking if she would have if it had of been a different colour. Yellow is the colour of smiley faces, sunshine, lemon sherbets (which are delicious), all things that make people happy. Our cause could be based on getting yellow out there and combining it with a smile and hello... or yellow?

2. Thumbs up for turtles! Littering is a massive issue when it comes to damaging the environment but asking people to save the planet it a little big for our cause. Turtles on the other hand could be the face of a new anti-litter campaign as they are severely endangered animals and often die as a result of mistaking plastic bags as jellyfish and choking on them. People would relate to the innocence of a turtle and could really catch on. "Dont litter, think of the turtles!"

3. Public transport is hell at peak hour, however it can be the simplest of things to make or break your day. On the way to uni last week a lady on the train was taking up so much room on a 3 seater and a man was sitting on the edge, when he saw me standing he pushed along the seat and made enough room for me to sit down. I was the happiest person that day! That afternoon it made me sit over for people to pay the gesture forward. Something so simple but it effected my day in such a way that it made me want to continue it, making it a good cause to encourage moving over and making room for people even though it can be awkward.

Final tribe symbol

Even the toilet man can round house kick!
This is our final symbol and besides the fact that its awesome it really does achieve what we wanted to do. Its simple, identifiable, has a nice sense of movement/action and mainly that its a bit of fun. This symbol basically captivates what the ninja's stand for as student in this class and as designers in general.

Week 4 - Symbols and meaning.

(Top) Peace symbol or Nero's cross?
A broken, upside-down cross. To Roman emperor Nero, who hated and persecuted the early Christians, it meant destruction of Christianity. Revived in the sixties by hippies and others who protested nuclear weapons, Western culture, and Christian values, it now symbolizes a utopian hope for a new age of global peace and earth-centered unity. But many of heavy metal rock fans would agree with Nero and use it to mock Christ and His followers(1).

I find it unusual that this symbol has so much meaning and yet no one actually knows the history behind it. It is interesting that it is a contemporary symbol of peace that has previously meant the exact opposite ~ just like the symbol above (bottom), a gesture that wasn't always so accepted when posing for a photograph.

Week 3 - Superstitions and cures.

Ancient legends, mystic charm and superstitions of Ireland:
An iron ring worn on the fourth finger was considered effective against rheumatism by the Irish peasantry from ancient times. Shamrock - symbol of good luck
http://www.libraryireland.com/AncientLegendsSuperstitions/Various-Superstitions-Cures-1.php

Italian superstition:
Spilling salt has also been thought to bring bad luck, even to some today. Why was this so? Salt was very important especially in Rome as it was used to preserve and purify food. It also served to be the soldiers' salary, of which salary meant "salt money." Thus, to spill salt would be a great waste and bad luck would befall the person who did so. This could be counteracted though, by throwing a pinch of salt it over the left shoulder into the face of the devil, who is supposedly poised there.

Chinese superstition:
The colour red was a colour of good luck to the Chinese, both of the past and the present. During the Lunar New Year, married Chinese would give their children, friends and relatives red packets filled with money as a symbol of good luck, as the colour red symbolises fire which is used to scare away evil spirits.
Yin yang - Symbol of balance.

Week 2 - Groups

Ady is a part of a group because of something she loves - dancing. When she was full time at Ed5 International she could be identified as a member of that group of dancers through the company logo. However smaller groups also appear and are mainly determined by what she is wearing. For example when she has point shoes on, she would be grouped as a ballet dancer however she also dances jazz, hip hop and many other styles where her outfit and shoes are completely different.

Tonje will probably kill me if she sees this photo haha. At Billy Blue we all identify as part of a group. Although we don't wear a uniform, there are aspects of how we represent ourselves that reflect the fact we are not only university students, but designers e.g our MacBooks and sketch pads.

Gus in his room, I think its pretty evident that he is a member of the football world and is a part of many groups with in it. Being Argentinian/Italian/Australian he supports a lot of teams. Supporting these teams not only groups him with these countries as a spectator but as pat of a nation (patriotism).

This is my high school uniform which during my school years placed me in a few different categories. With the emblem placed over every jumper and the school colours echoed throughout the uniform, i was very identifiable as a student at McCarthy Catholic College. Attending this school automatically made me a member of a large group of people but a number of other groups too. Being placed into 'house' teams for sport events is an example of this. Being a Catholic high school, i was also categorised into a system of religious beliefs. Already being a Christian, this was my high school of choice however you do not have to be of any particular religion to attend, yet you are still classified as part of that group.

This is Jimmy who works in the Navy. Everyday people can identify that he is part of a group through the many different uniforms he has to wear for different situations and occasions. The medals he wears also categorise him but not only into a group but to have certain qualities of which each medal represents.

Week 1 - Directional symbols

Pedestrian signs imply a direction in which people will be crossing the road to signal drivers to stop.

(Bottom) is a sources image from google as my camera couldn't zoom in close enough to photograph the actual sign i found (top). Along Parramatta Rd there is this symbol that directs you to the airport. This is a great symbol as not only does it point you where to go but clearly represents the destination.

This symbol i found in a pet shop in Broadway. I find it a good symbol because it is immediately recognisable and is clearly pointing you to where the fish are in the shop. The word 'fish' i feel isn't necessary when the image is so identifiable.

This is an advertisement for Coles that was on the window but is also displayed in bus stop shelters around the city. Although the hand is not pointing to anything below, it is implying the direction of prices within the store.

I saw this directional symbol at an Internet cafe/hot spot, pointing towards where to get started with headphones etc. Although it is clearly showing which way to go, i don't think it is very successful in encompassing the meaning of the destination.
